Evaluator – Role Description

Taking on this role improves active listening, critical thinking and positive feedback skills.

Evaluation is the heart of the Toastmasters educational program. You observe the speeches and leadership roles of your fellow club members and offer evaluations of their efforts, and they do the same for you. As evaluator you:

  • Ask those you’ve been assigned to evaluate what they will present and what they wish to achieve.
  • Provide objective verbal and written evaluations for speakers.
  • When giving any evaluation, offer praise as well as constructive criticism.

BEFORE THE MEETING:

Confirm with the General Evaluator who you have been assigned to evaluate.

If possible, connect with the member you will be evaluating to determine what they will present and what they wish to achieve.

Obtain the evaluation form for the specific speech project. There are digital evaluation links built into our digital agenda (see below), but the speaker may also choose to print or email the PDF version of the evaluation form from Basecamp.

Click the Evaluation Form link to open the digital evaluation form. As the speaker, you can copy and paste the link to share with your evaluator.

Whichever technique you use, you should provide the speaker with a written evaluation that reenforces and expands on the points you made in your verbal evaluation.

DURING THE MEETING:

Ensure that you have the evaluation from the member you will be evaluating.

While the member you will be evaluating speak, you will take notes to report on.

Provide objective verbal and written evaluations for speakers.

When giving any evaluation, offer praise as well as constructive criticism.

Consider following the evaluation form outline for your main points:

  • You excelled at …
  • You may want to work on …
  • To challenge yourself …
